Consultant, Mentor, or Coach?
There are three main areas that small to medium business typically look for support in.
Here are the three categories and their descriptions:
Consultant
A person who knows a lot about a particular subject and is employed to give advice about it to other people. Oxford Dictionary
A consultant will look at quantitative data to come with answers to problems. A consultant will be predominantly focused on the businesses performance.
Mentor
An experienced person who advises and helps somebody with less experience over a period of time. Oxford Dictionary
A mentor is a trusted guide who uses their past experiences. A mentor asks purposeful questions to the business owner to find answers and solutions. That can be for problems or growth strategies and everything in between. A mentor realises the business owner has all the answers; it's a matter of asking the right questions.
Business Coach
A person who supports and guides the business owner and helps them gain clarity, direction, and a vision for the business. A business coach will work with the business owner to understand their personal and professional goals, a way to get there and keep them accountable along the way.
How do I know if I am ready for help?
If you're in the start-up phase of your business, we believe a strong focus at this point is education. Upon a quick assessment, we can work out if you're ready for coaching, mentoring, or consulting. Don't be disappointed if we share with you that we think you're not ready yet. Typically at this stage, we would only do a one-off, 1 or 2-hour session to create an education road map. The more you can build your knowledge and education, the better your business foundations will be and the more you'll get out of your mentoring, coaching or consulting once you're ready.
Suppose you're at the stage in your business where you are growing and don't know what next steps to take to continue to grow, manage growth or systemise your business operation. In that case, you are more than likely ready to enter into a three-month program to focus on your one main, immediate goal.
Suppose you're in the consolidation phase of your business. In that case, it's time to shine a spotlight on your systems, processes, operational procedures, finances, people and build a strategy in preparation for your next growth cycle.
If you're in expansion mode or planning to expand, nows the time to think critically about the next steps and check the business model with your team coach/consultant/mentor, solicitor, accountant and financial advisor.
This brings us to maturity; most people don't think about engaging a coach or consultant once the business is at maturity; however, it's a great time to assess if you, as the owner, want to step back from the business part-time or all together. Linda successfully stepped out of two companies before selling and has one company that runs successfully without her.
